The years that the students spend in an university are exciting and challenging. During their stay, the time, new experiences, networking with people, and enhancing the level of knowledge are all crucial for the outcome results. Some may feel stressful to encounter such instances and people When students make use of resources that are available to them, the potentially negative impact of these events can be minimized or sometimes even eliminated. Left unattended, these same events can result in the impairment of a student's ability to function and do well in their study and research.

Bharathiar University encourages students to make use of the time they spend in the university to groom them as potential scientists and knowledge professionals. To overcome the hurdles and make the stay and study comfortable and smooth counseling services are being offered by the Counseling Center. Within ethical and legal guidelines, the services offered are confidential and are assured of privacy. The updated renewed and refocused services would help students to achieve course correction.

As many as 15 counseling sessions per academic year is made available to the students of this university with prior appointment with the Counseling center. The types of counseling to be offered include screening and evaluation, individual, and group counseling, crisis intervention, limited psychological assessments, and referral for medical and other services wherever needed and applicable.

The Bharathiar University Counseling Center has been formally inaugurated by Prof.Dr.A.Ganapathi Vice Chancellor of the university on 21st October 2016. The clients seeking help may reach the center from 24th October on all working days between 2 pm and 5.30 pm. How to start

The coordinator will respond to the request for an appointment within 12 hours. Appointments are scheduled between Monday and Friday 2 PM to 5 PM. It takes courage to take the first step to begin counseling . The clients will get reply at the earliest.

Counseling is confidential

All communication shared with the Counseling Center is confidential and protected by the law Information about attendance at the Counseling Center and any information revealed in sessions cannot be discussed with others. Counselors cannot even confirm that a student is visiting the Counseling Center for consultation without written consent.

Normally the coordinator after assessing the situation and the person will allocate a counselor to help the client.

Social media calls and responses through other media are prohibited

Special emphasis would be placed on the whole person than part of the issues.

Students are encouraged first and foremost to create and maintain healthy self-care practices in order to ensure they are taking responsibility for their own well-being. Students are advised to follow the healthy routines and practices in regard to sleep, diet, exercise, stress-reduction, time-management and self-assertiveness.

Counseling is to a maximum of 8-sessions per semester.

Counseling sessions are normally for a duration of 45-minutes in length.

Students may come to the Counseling Center for the following

Academic Concerns (struggling academically in a class, missing classes, fear of public speaking)

Adjustment to College (homesickness, difficulty being in an environment which is opposite of the person.)

  • Family Issues
  • Grief and Loss
  • Identity Questions
  • Relational Conflict
  • Self-Image
  • Sleep Disturbance
  • Stress (feeling overwhelmed, can’t keep up)
  • Uncontrollable Thoughts or Feelings about placement and Issues relating to placement
  • Willingness to change to situation

Students are welcome to the Counseling Center even if problems are not serious in nature. As you all know counseling is a process of helping the people who deserve some support and encouragement. The clinical counseling would be offered by experts and specialists in clinical psychology. For the minor issues and people who need reassurance the counseling center is the destination.

Problems or disruption in one area of your life can quickly begin to spill over into other areas of functioning, so it is important to address your problems as they arise. Don’t wait until all areas of your life are suffering.

Visit to counseling center

Your counselor will greet you when he/she is ready. The initial session is an opportunity for you and your counselor to get to know each other and to begin exploring the reasons you decided to seek counseling support. The counselor will also have you sign the Informed Consent Agreement form, review confidentiality and begin to help you think about what you desire to change as a result of coming to counseling.

This is an important time for you to ask any questions or voice any concerns you may have. If you do not know where to start, or feel overwhelmed by the thought of trying to convey all that you are experiencing in your life right now, take heart. Our counselors are experienced, professionals who are ready to sit with you and guide you, whatever stage you are at.
